Early March is traditionally a time to honor women who have left a lasting mark on history. However, when we talk about the tech world, we often overlook one crucial fact: modern computers, programming, and the very foundations of the internet are built directly on the ideas of women. Here are 8 remarkable figures who forever changed the course of tech history.

Ada Lovelace

A 19th-century mathematician, Ada wrote the first known algorithm for Charles Babbage's "Analytical Engine" (the ancestor of the modern computer). While others saw the machine merely as a complex calculator, Ada looked much further ahead. She predicted that if the machine could be taught to manipulate symbols, it could do more than just crunch numbers – it could compose music and create graphics. Because of this visionary insight, she is considered not only the first programmer but a true prophet of the digital age.

Grace Hopper

Grace Hopper, a US Navy Rear Admiral, created the first compiler. Her groundbreaking work made it possible for humans to give computers commands using an English-like language instead of complex, numerical codes. She was a key figure in the development of the COBOL programming language and is also credited with popularizing the term "bug" after finding an actual moth stuck in a computer system.

Hedy Lamarr

Beyond being a dazzling Hollywood star, Hedy Lamarr was a passionate inventor in her free time. During World War II, she co-developed "frequency-hopping" technology designed to secure radio signals. Though her idea wasn't fully appreciated at the time, today's wireless technologies – including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS – are built precisely on this principle.

Margaret Hamilton

When NASA was planning to send humans to the moon, computer scientist Margaret Hamilton led the software development team. The software her team created flawlessly handled critical errors and played a vital role in the safe landing of Apollo 11. Margaret actually coined the term "software engineering" and proved to the world that code is just as important as a rocket engine.

Radia Perlman

Often referred to as the "Mother of the Internet," Radia invented the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), which transformed chaotic network connections into a highly organized system. Without her invention, the internet as we know it simply wouldn't exist and would constantly crash from data congestion.

Elizabeth Feinler

Long before Google existed, there was Elizabeth Feinler. She managed the Network Information Center for ARPANET (the precursor to the internet). It was her team that developed the domain name system (.com, .gov, .edu) that we rely on every single day.

Annie Easley

Annie Easley was one of NASA's first African-American computer scientists. She developed the code used for the Centaur rocket stage. However, her earthly contributions are just as massive: her research laid the technological groundwork for the batteries used in modern hybrid vehicles.

Evelyn Berezin

Evelyn Berezin created the first computer specifically designed for word processing. Before her invention, making a mistake on a typewriter meant retyping the entire page. Evelyn forever changed office workflows and paved the way for programs like Microsoft Word. Furthermore, she is the creator of the first automated airline reservation system (ARS). She designed an unprecedentedly reliable computer network for United Airlines that revolutionized the aviation industry. Serving 60 cities, the system ran for 11 years without a single central system failure.

history has proven that talent and professionalism in tech have no gender. The ideas of these women laid the very foundation of the digital world where we live, work, and create today.

We are especially proud that the Connect team also features many talented women who work daily on innovative projects and are true professionals in their field.

Happy Women's Day! 🌸👩‍💻
